Rationale
Aussie Impact is owned by an Australian Company that is fully committed to;

Real Sustainability - Environmentally, Economically and Ethically.

Aussie Impact is an online marketplace, based in Mt Crosby Qld, developed to address three principal issues:

-
Provide customers with honest and fully transparent provenance of sustainable production and transport of their food.
-
Increase the financial returns for small to medium sized farmers and producers providing them optimal chance of equitable return for their effort.
-
Enable long-term funding for community projects delivering real benefit in education, junior sport, health, affordable housing, business/career opportunities etc.

Start of Operations

After introducing our ideas to the public, nothing much worked as planned. However, after utilising a small group of customers who supply constant feedback we now provide a smooth and comprehensive service.
Increasing

Shelf Life & Recycling

Traditionally, most of what is considered good practice in handling and storage of fruit and vegetables contributes to a reduction in shelf life. Instead, the processes used by Aussie Impact focus on increasing shelf life.
Our recycling process

We deliver in polystyrene boxes with a cold source included to protect the fruit and vegetables. When we deliver a new box of produce, we recover the old box from the previous delivery. This gives us the opportunity to recover all the packaging that we use. We also have an arrangement with the manufacturer of the polystyrene boxes which ensures all damaged and broken boxes can be recycled into new boxes.
Furthermore, the starched based plastics we use can be broken down in the composting process to become a source of nutrients for crops. While the hydrocarbon based plastics can be used as a food source to the larval stages of a small number of moths. Those larva can then be used as a food source for fish in either aqua culture or better aquaponics.
The Challenge

To develop an alternative and viable market for the 30% of produce grown which does not meet the ‘buy appeal’ criteria of supermarket chains.

The underlying problem

The loss of independent, family owned food and retail businesses from most suburbs and country towns has had a significant impact on the marketplace.

The result of this downturn

The loss of competition and a reliance on large supermarkets has resulted in farmers receiving far less for their total production. Consumers are also impacted as food prices increase and choice of product lines decrease.

The Search for Information

After realising data and statistics collected outside of Australia did not translate well to our own food supply chain, Aussie Impact dedicated eight years to research. During this time, we spoke to, and sort advice from, a wide range of objective and experienced individuals who all had one thing in common - knowledge of how the food supply chain had reached its current position.

Aussie Impact carefully studied every step along the supply chain from how produce was grown and the diverse range of food available to packing procedures, storage and transport. We also examined the differences between wholesale and retail and the impact each had on the supply chain. We believe customers should be given options for what they buy, without being manipulated through restrictions of choice.

Our Solution

At Aussie Impact, we acknowledge the collective money spent by customers controls the marketplace. In recognition of this, our aim is to give control back to our customers by supplying a range of high quality products, while truthfully disclosing origin at a competitive price.

This solution is achievable by ‘Integrated Coordination’ of all steps in the food supply chain with strong focus on:

-
Limited handling
-
Cost reductions
-
Increased shelf life
-
Decreased waste
Overall, these steps aim to reduce week-to-week costs for each household while providing higher returns for farmers.

The Next Step

We aim to build a loyal customer base that wants to buy genuine Australian grown and processed food. Our customers will benefit from food sustainably produced and transported to Australia’s exact production and inspection standards, all for an affordable price allowing viable returns for farmers and processors.

Aussie Impact will provide a members forum where customers, farmers and all of those who make up the supply chain can share their experience. This will allow a mutual understanding of both the problems and the joys of involvement in food production and supply.

Everyone has to eat, therefore, it is in everyone’s best interest to get the best possible sustainable food production and supply chain in place.
